Excavator Hydraulic Hose Selection in Practice: Why 4SH Four-Layer Wire-Wound Ultra-High-Pressure Hose Assemblies Withstand Boom Circuit Conditions

2026-10-16

Any hydraulic repair technician with a decade or more on construction sites has met these three situations:

1. After only half a year in service, the hose at the base of the excavator's boom cylinder bulged under the outer cover, and a few days later it burst outright, leaving the whole machine sitting in the pit waiting for a tow;

2. The fitting end showed no visible damage, yet it kept seeping oil; wipe it clean and the next day it is covered in oily sludge again, so to hold the schedule the crew simply wraps it in cloth and carries on;

3. The hose itself never burst, but the outer cover was worn through by the machine structure and the wire layer was exposed and rusted — and nobody could say which day the circuit would suddenly lose pressure.

These three look like three separate faults, but the root cause is the same: hose selection and assembly fabrication were not based on the excavator's real working conditions.

How harsh the real working conditions of an excavator hydraulic system are

The working pressure in the main circuit of an excavator is generally 30~45 MPa, and the boom, arm and swing circuits not only run at high pressure but also carry high-frequency pulses — every bucket load makes the pressure in the line swing sharply, and over one day that adds up to more than ten thousand pressure shocks. Then look at the environment: site dust, abrasion from sand and gravel, sun and rain, and the hose also has to flex repeatedly with the boom.

Ordinary one-layer and two-layer wire-braided medium-pressure hoses (the 2SN class) handle auxiliary circuits such as steering and pilot control without trouble, but put them on the boom main circuit and you are asking them to work permanently at the edge of their limit, where bursting is only a matter of time.

Three hard criteria to nail in selection

First, the pressure class must line up. For main circuits such as the boom, arm and swing, choose an EN 856 4SH four-layer wire-wound ultra-high-pressure hose, with maximum working pressure up to 420 bar (depending on bore size); the four-layer wound structure resists pulses and external crushing, and is designed precisely for high-frequency heavy-duty conditions such as excavators.

Second, assembly quality matters more than the hose itself. The same 4SH hose will still seep oil and burst if the crimping is not done properly. Fittings must match the hose (for example DKOS crimped fittings), and the crimp diameter and insertion depth must follow the procedure; every finished assembly should be pressure-tested one by one.

Third, the outer cover must be wear-resistant and weather-resistant. About 30% of hose wear on site comes from external abrasion; if the outer cover is not wear-resistant, once the wire layer is exposed the service life is cut in half.

How Shanghai Beirun engineers it

Shanghai Beirun Hydraulic Equipment Co., Ltd. (brand KUNGFLEX) has been working in hydraulic fluid connections for 17 years, is ISO 9001:2015 certified, and has burst testing capability of 4000 kg / approx. 400 MPa for ultra-high-pressure hose assemblies — about 10 times the standard working pressure. Assemblies can be custom-made to drawing for length and fitting type at both ends, each one is pressure-tested before delivery and issued with a test report. Supplied direct from a 2000 m² workshop in Nantong, with products exported to more than 80 countries and regions.

Experience from supporting one earthmoving fleet: after all boom-circuit hoses on its 20-tonne excavators were replaced with 4SH assemblies, hose-related downtime dropped noticeably, and the fleet owner's most immediate comment was "no more crawling under the machine to check hoses every six months."

On-site Inspection Checklist

• Boom/arm circuit hoses: are they 4SH class or above; is the outer cover bulged or cracked;

• Fitting area: any oil seepage or oily sludge; any relative movement of the crimp sleeve;

• Hose routing: is it in hard contact with machine structures; are the spring guards / hose guards missing;

• Replacement interval: main circuit hoses are recommended for preventive replacement every 2~3 years, or per the machine maker's hour-based service interval.

FAQ

Q: How often should excavator hydraulic hoses be replaced? A: For auxiliary circuits there is no problem in waiting until they fail; for main circuits such as the boom, preventive replacement every 2~3 years is recommended, and any bulging outer cover or seepage at the fitting means replace the hose immediately.

Q: What is the difference between 4SH and 4SP? A: Both are four-layer wound hoses, but 4SH is the ultra-high-pressure heavy-duty class, with a higher pressure class and a stiffer hose body at the same bore size; choose 4SH for excavator main circuits, and 2SN is enough for medium-pressure auxiliary circuits.

Q: What are the warning signs before a hose bursts? A: A bulging outer cover, seepage at the fitting root, and outer cover wear-through exposing the wire — any one of these means stop the machine and replace the hose immediately.

Q: Can I buy hose and crimp it myself? A: Not recommended. A crimp diameter that does not match the tooling is a leading cause of seeping and burst hoses, so buying ready-made hose assemblies direct is far more reliable.
