Colleagues in energy-storage integration know that the real failures are usually not the cells, but the "blood vessels." The three most common failure modes we see on site:
Going through these cases, the root cause comes down to two things: wrong material selection + poor fitting craftsmanship. Energy-storage duty is trickier than construction machinery - the medium spans several chemical families from water-glycol and fluorinated fluid to strongly acidic electrolyte and high-pressure hydrogen; temperature swings repeatedly between -40C and 120C; and it must withstand the IEC 60068-2-6 vibration grade. Dropping in a "whatever flows" rubber hose is a guaranteed tuition payment.
The mainstream is a three-stage line: the primary main pipe uses 304 stainless steel or PPH pipe; the secondary distribution uses hydrolysis-resistant PA12 pipe; the third-stage PACK connection is the flexible hose + quick coupling, at -40C-85C, 0.8-1.2 MPa. The liner material follows the medium: EPDM for water-glycol, FKM for oil cooling, and PTFE / FEP fully fluorinated material for immersion in fluorinated fluid. The hard requirements are four words - hydrolysis resistance, flame retardancy, low extraction, pulse resistance; the quick coupling must also have double sealing and withstand >=2000 mate cycles without leaking.
The strongly acidic positive/negative electrolyte circulates; traditional metal pipe rusts on contact. The safe solution is a PTFE / PVDF fluoroplastic liner, UHMWPE, or silicone-steel-wire hose (tolerant to 5 mol/L vanadium ions, volume change <1% after long immersion), wrapped with stainless steel wire for negative-pressure resistance. Low flow loss and no electrolyte contamination are the baseline.
Hydrogen atoms are small, permeate, and embrittle. This section must use hydrogen-compatible materials - 316L stainless steel corrugated hose, PTFE-lined hose - and pass hydrogen embrittlement assessment per ASTM G142 (RRA>0.9 to be safe). This is also a key scenario covered by KUNGFLEX's hydrogen pipeline solution (hydrogen production / storage / refueling / utilization).
The hose for perfluorohexanone / water mist must withstand tens of MPa impact instantly, and the liner must not swell or crack; there is also the thermosensitive fire-detection tube for point-to-point early suppression. No room for luck in this section.
Shanghai Beirun Hydraulic Equipment Co., Ltd. (brand KUNGFLEX / Kongfu) is a source factory for hydraulic hoses and fluid connectors, ISO 9001:2015 certified, products exported to 80+ countries. Our strongest card is the 4000 kg / approx. 400 MPa ultra-high-pressure burst test capability (about 10x the standard working pressure). We self-produce the full chain of hose assemblies, steel tube assemblies, ball valves, and quick couplings, and can provide energy-storage customers with a one-stop "material + process + verification" solution for the high-pressure section of the liquid-cooling main loop, fire-fighting extinguishing medium delivery, and the hydrogen high-pressure section.
Q: Can liquid-cooling hoses use ordinary rubber tubes?
No. Long-term immersion in water-glycol makes ordinary rubber swell and ooze; EPDM / FKM etc. must be used with a compatibility certificate.
Q: Can flow batteries use metal hoses?
Ordinary metal is prohibited in strongly acidic environments; prefer PTFE / PVDF-lined hose or PP-H / PVC plastic piping to avoid Fe3+ and other ion contamination that unbalances vanadium valence.
Q: How to prevent hydrogen embrittlement in hydrogen lines?
Choose 316L austenitic stainless steel, control smelting purity and weld ferrite content, and apply PTFE / alumina surface coating to block hydrogen permeation when necessary; the high-pressure section must use products certified for hydrogen compatibility.
